the Rostra

The Rostra dated from 338 B.C. It was the speaking platform at the Roman Forum. The Rostra, to which the rams of captured ships had been attached, was located at the edge of the Comitium. You can still see the holes in which the pegs were fixed. With these pegs the rams were attached. If the population of Rome was enraged the heads of enemies would be stuck to the sharp rams. By the way, the Romans frequently suffered the same fate. Rome's famous orator Cicero was the poor one on the 7th of December 43 B.C. His hands and head were stuck to the rams, after he had fallen into Mark Antony's disgrace.
